How does Federal Skilled Worker Program Work

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is one of three economic immigration programs under Canada’s Express Entry, an online system for managing and processing immigration applications. The federal skilled worker is the most popular visa stream, allowing thousands of skilled workers to migrate to Canada permanently on their ability to become economically established in Canada.

What is Federal Skilled Worker Point System?

Skilled applicants under the FSW program are evaluated based on several factors, such as age, work experience, qualifications, language skills, job offer, and other adaptability factors. These parameters determine a candidate’s ability to successfully integrating into Canadian society.

As a highly competitive stream, federal skilled worker utilizes a comprehensive ranking system to rank eligible applicants. To qualify, an applicant must score at least 65 points in the Canada point system when assessed across six selection factors.

Federal Skilled Worker Program Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must be able to get sufficient points in the following categories;

  • Language Skills- you must reach a minimum of Canadian language benchmark 7 CLB to get 28 points.
  • Education- a minimum of secondary education or high school diploma or the equivalent foreign education can get you up to 25 points. You must include your Canadian credential or your foreign credential and Educational Credential Assessment report at the application time.
  • Work Experience- applicants can get up to 15 points for the number of years they have spent working full time in the last ten years.
  • Age- a maximum of 12 points is available for applicants between 18 and 46. Candidates outside this range get no points
  • Arranged Employment- a candidate may be awarded 10 points for having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. The offer must be received before applying for immigration through Canada express entry program.
  • Other adaptability factors- an applicant can get a maximum of 10 points for having a skilled spouse, for partner’s language skills, education in Canada, or having an arranged employment in Canada.

They must demonstrate the availability of funds through bank statements and other financial documents. Medical examinations and security clearances are also crucial requirements for a successful Canada PR process.

How do I apply as Federal Skilled Worker?

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Find out your eligibility using the pointers mentioned above, make sure you meet the minimum requirements for the program in the areas such as language proficiency, age, work experience, education, etc. Also, ensure you score the minimum points in the FSW point grid.

Step 2: Gather necessary documents

To create an Express Entry profile, you must have access to the following documents:
  • ID Proof- Make sure you have a valid passport and other supporting ID proofs to lodge your application.
  • Language test report- you need to submit the test results of your IELTS exam to demonstrate your language skills. The test results are valid for two years. English candidates can submit the test results of IELTS or CELPIP, whereas French applicants can submit the results of TEF and TCF.
  • Education- for education outside Canada, you must provide a positive credential assessment report for your degree/diplomas/certificates.
Step 3: Create your Express Entry profile

For this, you need to visit the IRCC website. You’ll be asked a series of questions for which you must provide complete and correct answers. Ensure your information is genuine, as it would require you to submit documents in favor of your answers.

You will get an invitation to apply if your scores are good. Otherwise there are many ways to improve your CRS and boost your chances of getting an ITA in the next draw.

One popular way of increasing your CRS is re-taking the language test, upgrading your skills, or checking if you are eligible under any provincial nominee program.

Step 5: Receive an invitation to apply

In this step, you must submit a complete Canadian permanent residence application within 60 days of receiving it. Once an application is received, an immigration officer assesses the application to “verify the applicant’s CRS score and program eligibility.
