It’s important for a foreign national to acquire a valid job offer before migrating to Canada under Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). So, the temporary work programs can be divided into the following categories:
- Canada LMIA Based Visa
- Student Permit
- Working Holiday
What is Canada LMIA Based Visa?
The LMIA based visa is introduced for people outside Canada who want to lawfully work in Canada. These candidates are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents, and require an official work permit visa granted by the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to get employed with a Canadian employer.
The prospective candidates don’t need to follow the point-based system to obtain the LMIA based visa.
There are two types of Canada work permit visas:
- Employer-Specific Work Permit- this is the most common type of work permit applied by the majority of foreign-nationals. The visa permits applicants to work for a specific employer in Canada. The visa clarifies for which employer a person is going to work, for how long, and the location for your work. In case, a professional decides to switch the company, then he/she needs to apply for a new temporary visa based on the new employer.
- Open Work Permit- Having an open work permit means you are free to choose which company you wish to work for and for how long. The visa allows you to move to Canada without any job offer, and is not limited to a particular employer. However, the visa restricts your choices in terms of occupation you’d like to take up.
Student Permit- Catering to international students, this student work permit visa allows graduates to work in any part of Canada while they study, work temporarily, or stay as permanent residents after graduation. Having this visa, an applicant can gain a valuable Canadian work experience, which can further strengthen their chances of obtaining permanent residency via Canadian Experience Class.
Under this visa, a student becomes eligible for an open work permit for up to three years, depending upon the course or duration of study. The visa comes with strict time limits and expires after 90 days of completing the graduation.
What is LMIA fees and Processing Time?
A processing fee of $1000 CAD is required for an application to be processed under LMIA. For processing time, one must note that it entirely depends upon the nature of application, and the extent of demand an occupation has in Canada. So, make sure your chosen occupation is under the high-demand category for the immigration officials to process it quickly.
How to Convert LMIA based visa into Permanent Residency?
Once you spend considerable time in Canada on LMIA based work permit visa, it’s easy to convert the same into the permanent residency after satisfying the eligibility requirements. For this, you may opt for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) pathway, which comes under federal economic immigration program by IRCC. The visa pathway is appropriate for individuals who have some experience of working in Canada.
