General skilled migration program

As the most highly sought- after migration program, General Skilled Migration visas allow foreign professionals to move to Australia without being sponsored by any Australian employer. To apply under the GSM category, one must have an occupation featuring on in-demand list of occupations. Applicants invited to apply for the visa are evaluated based on age, education experience, work experience, language skills, etc.
 

Skilled Independent Visa- Subclass 189 visa

Skilled migration visa subclass 189 visa is a points-tested stream, requiring a minimum of 65 points for the applicant to qualify. The points are calculated based on multiple factors, including age, work experience, English language proficiency, partner’s qualifications, etc.

The Subclass 189 visa is the most popular and competitive pathway in the skilled migration stream. Applicants must be invited to apply to have this visa. A skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) allows a visa holder to permanently live and work anywhere in Australia. The Subclass 189 also does not require you to be sponsored any state or territory in Australia.
 

Who is eligible?

To apply, you must:

  • Hold a Positive Skill Assessment for an occupation on the MLTSSL
  • Meet the pass mark in the skilled migration points test – currently 65.
  • Be aged between 18 – 45 years
  • Lodge an Expression of Interest
  • Be invited to apply for the visa
  • Have Competent English or higher (6 minimum in IELTS)
  • Meet health and character requirements
 

Skilled Nominated Visa- Subclass 190 

The skilled nominated visa subclass 190 allows applicants sponsored by an Australian state or territory to live and work in a specific region. Each state and territory in Australia has different requirements for nominating an applicant and grant the visa.

A state nomination can boost your application with five points, thus help you meet the 65 point threshold to apply for a skilled visa.

In subclass 190, the scores are calculated in the same way as in Skilled Independent visa. However, an applicant for a Skilled nominated visa must secure a nomination first from a state or territory government. Once a nomination is received, you can submit a visa application for a Subclass 190 visa.

Skilled Regional Subclass 491 visa

The Skilled Work Regional Visa had replaced the 489 visa on 16 November 2019.

The subclass 491 visa is a five-year temporary visa, which may lead to permanent residency. The visa stream allows a holder to work and live in a regional area for at least five years. Nomination from a state or a territory is a must. It’s not an employer-sponsored visa and requires you to commit to living and working in a regional area.

Steps to migrate to Australia

  • Check eligibility requirements
  • Submit your expression of interest (EOI). EOI grants you points on the following:
  • Age
  • Education Qualifications
  • English Level
  • Work Experience
  • Relationship Status
  • Regional Nomination
  • Receive an invitation to apply (ITA) in case of subclass 189 visa. Or, receive a state nomination in case of subclass 190 or 491 visa.
  • Apply for the visa, after receiving an invitation for the visa, you will have 60 days to lodge a visa application. Without an invitation you are not eligible to apply.

  • A copy of original Passport with 6 Months Validity from date of travel
  • Visa application form
  • Report of Educational Credential Assessment
  • Birth certificate
  • Character certificate
  • Proof of nomination (if any)
  • Test results of IELTS or PTE exam for English proficiency
  • 2 passport size photos
  • Spouse Skill documents if a spouse is also applying for a PR visa
  • Police Clearance Certification (PCC)
  • Business reference letters
 

Processing Time and Fee

Once you’re invited, apply for the visa within the 60 days of receiving an invitation. The skilled visa takes anywhere from 12 to 14 months to process. The processing fee starts from AUD4, 045.

General Skilled Migration Visas allows foreigners to migrate to Australia without having an employer sponsor their visa. To be able to apply for general skilled migration visas you must be skilled in an occupation that is in demand in Australia. Applicants are invited to apply for general skilled migration visas based on factors such as their occupation, work experience, education and English ability.

General Skilled Migration is the most popular form of permanent migration to Australia, as it allows the visa holders access to a permanent work visas, without being linked to only one employer.
